One Hour a Day to Blogging Success

by WorkFromHome on September 18, 2011

There are a lot more people who say they want to work from home than people who actually try it. One of the excuses that is given the most often from people who won’t take the plunge with their own home business is that it takes up too much time to get started. In response to that group of people, we’re going to take a look at a simple plan to create a successful blog. The key to being able to make money blogging isn’t hours and hours of effort, but a small amount of effort applied consistently and efficiently over time. Our plan is going to include one maintenance day, three content days and three promotional days each week. Let’s get started with some basics so that we can put this plan into action.

Keyword Research the Easy Way

You don’t need a lot of crazy keyword research tools if you want to work at home using a blog. what you do need, however, is a very smart way of using free tools like the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. The point of keyword research is to figure out keyword phrases that you should base your blog posts around to gain easy amounts of traffic from search engines. A keyword phrase is a good choice if it has a low amount of competition in the search engines, especially if it brings visitors who are likely to take profitable actions once they are on your website. You should end up doing keyword research about once each month or less if you do it right the first time.

Developing Content

So our premise is to spend seven hours each week on a blog and to have it be successful, and three of those hours should be spent producing content. Ideally, you’re going to want to post a new article on your blog once each on three different days of the week. People working at home often have a hard time incorporating keyword research into content development, so we’re going to make it really easy for you. Pick one keyword phrase that you want to compete for and create a blog post centered around that keyword phrase. Make the post at least 400 words long, and use the keyword phrase in the title of the article. That’s about all there is to it.

Promoting Your Blog

Three days each week, you should spend an hour promoting your blog. You can do this in any number of ways, but it should include building backlinks and building an online presence. One day you might decide to sign up with a couple of forums that are related to the industry your blog covers so that you can answer some questions and put a link back to your blog in your forum signature. Another day, you might decide to do some social bookmarking and to build some serious links back to a few of your blog posts. For most people who are working from home, promotion is the most tedious part of operating a blog. You’ll need to push through that mental barrier and really force yourself to give 100 percent if you want this plan to work because the promotion of the blog is just as important, if not more important, than creating content.

The Maintenance Day

After you alternate creating content and promoting your blog for three days each, you’re going to need to take a day to do basic maintenance on your blog. Do not skip this or you will simply fail at building a successful blog. On your maintenance day, you should create an up-to-date backup of your blog, do any extra keyword research that you need to get done, and perform any changes for split testing your monetization method. This is the day when all of the metaphorical nuts and bolts of the blog get tweaked and optimized for maximum performance. This type of regular maintenance is critical for the long term health of your blog. If you stick to this plan as it’s laid out, then you’ll have more than likely created a profitable web asset within three to six months.
