Mystery Shopper Jobs

Everyone that has ever read a magazine, looked at a newspaper classified section, or has surfed the Internet has seen the advertisements for Secret Shopper Jobs. Everyone, and some point, has read how you can make money by dining out and making purchases. However, if you are like most people, you have simply skimmed over this advertisement and moved on. The sad truth is that by bypassing these jobs, many have overlooked one of the most rewarding and exciting home based careers around.

What Are Secret Shopper Jobs?

Corporations of all sizes want to know the truth about their services and products. They want to hear first-hand accounts of experiences that their customers have in their storefronts. Managerial reports, statistics and compiled reports can only tell so much. The truth is in the experience, and they are willing to pay consumers to find out how they are doing as a company.

Secret shoppers are people that go into a store or restaurant and request a specific item, order a certain dish from the menu, or request information about a sale or service. Occasionally you may be requested to perform this task at a specific time of day. Once they have performed the duty, they return home and fill out a report on the experience and fax it in to the corporation for payment. It is that simple.

What Do I Need To Be A Mystery Shopper?

To become a mystery shopper you will need the following items:

  • Personal transportation – You will be required to go to many different places as a secret shopper, and it is imperative to have transportation.
  • Cell phone – Some companies may request that you make phone calls to service numbers or report to them while on site.
  • Fax machine – While many companies are transitioning over to online submittal forms, some still request that you complete your evaluation and fax it into their office directly.
  • Notebook – You will want to jot down all the information about your experience right after it occurs. This will keep you very accurate in your findings. You can use these notes to create your report when you return home.

Where Do I Find Mystery Shopping Jobs?

The first place that you should look for one of these positions is on the Internet. There are several companies that hire secret shoppers online. These companies are always hiring because the amount of service requests they receive is continually growing. All areas need secret shoppers, so the positions never have residency requirements.

When you are looking for this type of employment it is important that you take the time to do a little research. Find out about the company before making your application. As with any great opportunity, there is always the risk of scam. Remember, this is just like a real job and you will go through a hiring process. There are no fees involved, and any company requesting fees should be avoided. No experience is necessary; however you may be required to submit a resume with your application.

How Do You Get Paid To Be A Mystery Shopper?

When you are a mystery shopper you are paid for your time and reimbursed for any purchases you made. You do not have to return the products; they are yours free and an added bonus to your work. Depending on the type of “shop” you are required to do will determine how you are paid for your time. Some companies are also offering to reimburse you for mileage. You should review payment procedures before you take your first task.

Things To Remember

The only disadvantage of this type of work is the fact that you must pay for the product or service upfront and wait for reimbursement. When you are just beginning on this type of career it can be a little rough. As you progress with your tasks, the out-of-pocket expenses diminish because you are continually receiving payment for your work.

You can increase your payment level by taking customer service certifications. These certifications are not required to participate, but if you have one you will make more money per job. There are two levels of certification, each increasing your earning potential. These tests are relatively inexpensive, and are worth the increase in pay.
