Make Money from Home as a Freelancer

by WorkFromHome on November 4, 2011

When many people hear the word “freelance,” they often think of poor and broke people or starving artists waiting for a big break to some along. The vast majority of work from home professionals actually achieve substantial success exclusively through freelance opportunities, jobs, and assignments. In fact, even those working at home for established companies often have side jobs or gigs that can be classified as “freelance” work. A freelancer is simply a self-employed professional that specializes in any number of professions and provides services to any number of clients in exchange for cash. The most common home-based freelancers are writers, photographers, bloggers, and voice-over artists. Freelancers have the ultimate control over their schedule and income potential. Here are a couple of the most common home-based freelance jobs and ways on how to get started in each industry.

Freelance Writing

If you have a strong command of the English language, are adaptive and are familiar with different writing styles, and can research unfamiliar topics quickly, you can make a lot of money as a freelance writer. Some freelance writers work on novels or short stories, while others prefer to capitalize on writing articles for content generating sites or submitting work on behalf of private clients.

It can take some time to get started with freelance writing. It is important to apply to as many content generating and revenue sites as possible, even if it is not your ultimate goal to work in these environments. While these sites do generally pay less than major online publications, marketing firms, and larger corporations, they are great places to make a name for yourself and begin building a writing portfolio, while gaining some loyal private clients and invaluable experience. In the writing world, you have to prove that you have the skills and experience necessary to thrive in the industry. If you can prove that you can adapt to various writing styles, provide quality writing samples on a consistent basis, and meet critical deadlines, you can make a ton of money from home as a freelance writer.

Within a short period of time, you can branch out to other forms of online freelance writing and set your own rates. The typical rate for a new freelance writer with a good or excellent level of writing skill is between .01 and .05 per word, which is actually very good when compared to other types of work from home job rates. Work from home online forums, classified advertisement sites, and online job boards are great places to find legitimate writing assignments and information on established writing sites.

Freelance Photographers

Whether you have mastered the beauty of nature scenes, stills, intimate photos of humans and pets, or are gifted at capturing life’s most precious moments, you can make money from home as a freelance photographer. Getting started is incredibly easy; online galleries and photo sharing websites update and maintain state-of-the-art sites where freelance photographers can upload, sell, display work and gain exposure. These sites take the guess work out of finding interested customers and clients. They even offer tips and suggestions on how to price your work and reach out to a larger audience.

You can choose to sell your work for a lower price as “non-exclusive” which allows multiple users to have access to the rights to your work. With non-exclusive submissions, you do get to essentially “rent” out your work and maintain the rights to your work, which can be much more valuable than a larger up-front payment. As customers rent your work, they are required to credit you as the photographer on their website or blog. If a major blog or company uses your pictures, you can gain hundreds of clients without doing any of the hard work. As visitors stumble upon their site, they see the work and your name and can either email the site administrator for more information, look you up online, or click a link to be taken to your online photo gallery.

If you sell your work as exclusive, you will earn a very large sum of money. This is great if you are short on cash or do not foresee being able to sell the work under any other pretense. If it is a time-sensitive photo or promotional piece, selling the photo as exclusive will likely be more profitable than selling it as non-exclusive. You do forfeit your rights to the photo and the purchaser is able to resell your image or make changes as they see fit.

It can take a bit of time, initially, to gain clients, customers, and apply for genuine work assignments and gigs. Once a freelancer establishes a steady base of clients and recurring jobs, the sky is the limit in terms of earning potential. Most successful home-based freelancers earn an average of $50,000 per year, working part-time hours.
