In general, customer service representatives work on the phone. Many new positions are, however, opening up that are Internet only based. You will spend a majority of your time answering questions, solving problems and taking orders. Must customer service reps are trained for their position according to the policies of the company. Most companies that use telecommuters will also offer that training on the Internet.

There are 10 things that you must know about customer service jobs if you plan to be successful at this lucrative home-based career.

  1. Personality: You must have the right personality type of work in the customer service industry. While most people are very pleasant to deal with, you will encounter a few that are mean and nasty. You will have to be even-tempered and kind to these people, even when it is the last thing that you wish to do. Your job, and your income, depends on you being able to handle these un-pleasantries. You cannot take what they say to you on the phone as a personal insult. Just keep telling yourself that they are this mean to everyone.
  2. Boredom: There are times when you are doing this job that you will be bored. While this is not real common, it does happen. Answering the same questions repetitively can be annoying. It is part of the job. You have to fine-tune your demeanor to be able to get through these types of days. You cannot abandon your post simply because the customers are annoying that day.
  3. Computer Skills: You need to be very familiar with your computer. Make sure you know how to maneuver through the Internet with ease. If you have been given special software to use from the company you are working for, you need to know it inside and out. People call customer service lines or use the live chat on a site because they want quick answers. You always have to be able to provide quick service.
  4. Requirements for Equipment: As a customer service representative you will need to have a good computer with a high-speed connection to the Internet. You will also need a land-line if you are taking calls. Customer service positions must be conducted over a dedicated land-line to avoid dropping calls. The company will re-route calls to that phone number during your shift.
  5. Type of Position You Desire: There are many different types of customer service positions that are available. There are positions that take orders, set appointments, provide help, schedule repairs, and the list goes on. Know what you feel the most comfortable with and look for that type of position. If you are happy with your position, you will be successful.
  6. Hours: Customer service is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Most of these major companies have an international clientele, so they must be open around the clock to provide excellent service. This is very advantageous because you can select the hours you work, and work as long as you would like. Of course, the odd-time hours are always the most available, but working these hours can be very accommodating to other parts of your life.
  7. Looking for work: You should look for this type of position on the Internet and in your community. Many businesses are changing over to home based employees because of the reduced expenses for the office. You should be prepared to submit a resume when you apply for these positions.
  8. Scams: There are many scams out there on the Internet advertising customer service positions. The best way to avoid them is to leave any site that requests payment for a position. Companies that hire work at home customer service representatives do so in the same manner as they would hire an on-site employee. You should never pay for information or job placement. These jobs are advertised, for free, on all the major job listing sites.
  9. Pay rates: Customer service repress that work from home usually make the same, or a little more, than the same position in an office. This is another way that you can spot a scam. Any company offering outrageous pay is a scam. Businesses use telecommuters to reduce costs, not increase them. Many companies also offer incentives for sales and other tasks, so your pay can increase. When you take into account the money you will save by working from home, you will actually have a great increase in pay.
